The reception, hosted by the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, recognized past and present Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipients from Fulton, Miami, and Starke Counties. Over 100 people were in attendance including recipients, parents of recipients, board members, educators, and donors. Kahn's Katering of Carmel catered the event. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program provides scholarships for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation per year for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private college or university accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Fulton County Community Foundation's LECS recipients in attendance were Adam Albright, Kevin McCarthy, and Jenna Melton, 2003 recipients; Abigail Troutman, 2002 recipient; and Amanda VanScoy-Cornett, 1999 recipient. Those unable to attend were Ryan Johnson, 1998 recipient; Daniel Sirken 1999 recipient; Marie Rosswurm and Katie Spencer, 2000 recipients; George E. (Chip) Pollock IV, Kyle Robinson and Lynn Statler, 2001 recipients; and Alisa Cole and Derek Jacobs, 2002 recipients. Those LECS recipients in attendance from Miami County were Douglass Anewalt, Maggie Noonan and Michael Nowling, 2003 recipients; Jonathan Guthrie, Stephanie Miller and Amanda Maxwell, 2002 recipients; Christie Rogers, 2000 recipient; and special guest, Claire Balsbaugh Kellems, Miami County's 1998 and first LECS recipient. Those unable to attend were John Davidson and Courtney See, 1999 recipients; Natasha Hart, 2000 recipient; and Philip Kendall, Jamie Myers, and Brandon Reese, 2001 recipients. Finalists for the Miami County Community Foundation's 2003 LECS in attendance were Elisha Hudson, Lindsey Hull and Lauren Hull. Elisha, Lindsey and Lauren have been awarded a one-time, $1000 scholarship from the Miami County Community Foundation.
Starke County 2003 LECS recipients in attendance were Megan Danyi, Karl Hall and Craig Nielsen, 2003 recipients; Nathan Origer and Kory Risner, 2002 recipients; Olivia Barzydlo and Chelsea Wait, 2001 recipients; and Drew Rannells, 2000 recipient. Those unable to attend were Will Runkle, 1998 recipient; Gabrielle Casey and Emily Dolezal, 1999 recipients; Tracy Banasiak, 2000 recipient; Shelli Surma, 2001 recipient; and Michael Matsey, 2002 recipient. For many of these students and their families, receiving this scholarship is a life-changing event. It allows the student to pursue dreams that may have seemed impossible. With the graduating classes of 2003, there are nearly 1,700 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars attending more than 30 colleges in the state. Since 1996, Lilly Endowment Inc. has invested more than $1 billion in programs to strengthen higher education in Indiana and to encourage communities to examine their own educational needs and how best to address them. Although the Endowment funds the program, it is administered by the Indianapolis-based Independent Colleges of Indiana. Lilly Scholars 2003Starke County Community Foundation Announces
Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Winners Three Starke County students will receive full, four-year scholarships as the Starke County Community Foundation's 2003 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. Megan Lynn Danyi, Karl Adam Hall and Craig Roland Nielsen will receive not only full tuition to the Indiana college of their choice, but, also an $800 stipend for required books and equipment. Megan is the daughter of Garry and Pamela Danyi of North Judson. After graduating from North Judson-San Pierre High School, she plans to attend Purdue University this fall where she will major in Pharmacy. Megan would like to pursue a career in Pharmaceutical Research.
Craig, also a senior at North Judson-San Pierre High School, is the son of Roland and Kathy Nielsen of San Pierre. He is interested in attending either Valparaiso or Notre Dame University and majoring in Communications, but his college choice is undecided at this time.
Karl, a senior at Oregon-Davis Junior/ Senior High School, will major in Engineering at Tri-State University. He is the son of Richard and Lita Hall of Grovertown and plans to pursue a career as a Mechanical Engineer.
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must be residents of Starke County. The Starke County Community Foundation Scholarship Committee received a total of thirty-four applications. The selection of nominees was done in two phases. During the first phase, students were scored on their application essay, their SAT scores, their GPA, curriculum difficulty, their school and community activities, work experience and letters of recommendation. Twelve students were selected to advance to the second or final phase. During the final phase, the students wrote an impromptu essay and interviewed with the Starke County Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. The finalists' names were then submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the selection of the recipients. Independent Colleges of Indiana is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited, degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state. The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree. There were 363 scholarship awarded statewide. |
