2004 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Winners

Three Starke County students will receive full, four-year scholarships as the Starke County Community Foundation's 2004 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

Matthew B. Baughman, Matthew W. Fosler, and Matthew R. Musial will receive not only full tuition to the Indiana college of their choice, but also an $800 stipend for required books, fees and equipment.

Matthew Baughman is the son of Bruce and Tina Baughman. After graduating from Oregon-Davis High School he plans to attend Bethel College majoring in Christian or Youth Ministries. Matthew would like to pursue a career as a Youth Pastor or in another Christian leadership position.

Matthew Fosler, a senior at Knox Community High School, is the son of Jeff and Shirley Fosler. He will major in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry Education at Purdue University. Matthew is interested in a career teaching chemistry at the secondary level.

Matthew Musial, a senior at The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities, plans to major in Pre-Law at Valparaiso University and pursue a career in the legal profession. He is the son of Robert and Carla Musial of Knox. The Indiana Academy is a two-year residential public high school for Indiana's gifted and talented students located on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie.

To qualify, Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship applicants must be a current resident of Starke County, a high school senior graduating from an accredited Indiana high school by the end of June 2004. Applicants must apply and be accepted for a full-time baccalaureate course of study by April 30, 2004, to begin no later than the fall of 2004 at a public or private college or university in Indiana accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Starke County Community Foundation Scholarship Committee received a total of thirty-one applications. Three nominees and at least one alternate were selected, and their applications and evaluation summary forms were forwarded to ICI for the final selection process and approval in accordance with applicable law and the overall goals of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. Independent Colleges of Indiana is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited, degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree. There were 363 scholarship awarded statewide.

Past recipients in Starke County are:
