Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Winners for Starke County

Two (2) Starke County students will receive full, four-year scholarships as the Starke County Community Foundation's 2005 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

Julia K. Bachert and Kathleen C. Freet will receive not only full tuition to the Indiana college of their choice, but, also an $800 stipend for required books, fees and equipment.

Julia is the daughter of James and Susan Bachert. After graduating from North Judson-San Pierre High School, she plans to attend Purdue University this fall where she will major in Nursing.

Kathleen, a senior at Oregon-Davis High School, is the daughter of David and Kelly Freet. She will major in Psychology at Valparaiso University.

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, the applicant must be a current Starke County Resident, a high school senior graduating by the end of June 2005, with a diploma from an accredited Indiana high school, and must be accepted for a full-time baccalaureate course of study by April 30, 2005, to begin no later than the fall of 2005, at a public or private college or university in Indiana accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Starke County Community Foundation Scholarship Committee received a total of nineteen (19) applications.

Two (2) nominees and at least one (1) alternate was selected, and their applications and evaluation summary forms were forwarded to ICI for the final selection process and approval in accordance with applicable law and the overall goals of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. Independent Colleges of Indiana is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited, degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree. There were 216 scholarships awarded statewide.
